The Sahel Meets the Far East

AncelottiPachuca of Mexico can go far, so too can the Tunisians Etoile. They eliminated Al Ahly, who themselves went close to making last year’s final and managed to clinch third place” Carlo Ancelotti

So apparently Ancelotti thinks Etoile has what it takes to do some damage in Japan during the Club World Cup that starts this weekend. Using Al Ahly as a measuring stick kinda rubs me the wrong way but he is right. The Egyptians had a good run in last year’s tournament and defended their colors with pride on the world stage. I’ve seen Pachuca play this season and I can say that Etoile should be able to take them if they play up to the level we’ve come to expect from them both in the domestic league and in African competitions.

Motivation will not be a problem. That much is clear from the following videos that follows their training camp in South Korea in preparation for the main event. Etoile beat Korean champions (who are currently second in the table), Hyundai by the score of 3-0. Looks like they’re not having too much trouble acclimating to the new weather conditions, time zone, and food. They look in fine form and they got to test every single player that came along for the ride. Plenty of options for Marchand. Sunday can’t come fast enough!

Worth noting is Chermiti’s discussion with Balbouli at the airport. He starts cracking up while talking about the biting incident with the Club Africain defender. I can’t get enough of this guy. I’ve heard rumors that Ahly were trying to nab him, Nafkha, and Ben Fraj either this winter or next year. I’m sure they already know it but they have some competition. It’s hard to imagine Chermiti or anyone else from ESS playing on Al Ahly, it just wouldn’t seem right. Then again that’s how a lot of people felt about Boujelbene when he left…

This Sunday’s Dimanche Sport is available thanks to the ever reliable Beurkman. It starts out with these segments and then moves into the matches that took place in Tunisia this weekend.

nice post rami. im getting really excited for this tournament and for tunisian football in general, with chkihaoui beasting and etoile in good form, this is definatly going to lead to good things for the reputation of our game. i dont know how it works with you guys, but i have a lot of friends who follow football passionatly, but the oly things they know about african football is what i brag to them about tunisia. hopefully now they will get to see first hand our attractive brand of fooball and maybe develop a new found respect for tunisia. i dont want to jinx our chances so i’ll stop talking now…

yea man, same thing with me and my friends (at least the ones in the states). all of them know a lot about europe and some are into mls too (i’ve been to my fair share of DC United games actually) but they don’t really know much about football on the african landscape. i will say that tunisia has boosted its profile slightly by being present at the world cup consistently but they’ve yet to impress so i dont have much to brag about in that department. we’re not yet a sexy team to support from african like cameroon, ghana, cote d’ivoire, or senegal. hopefully that changes in the future.

i’ve already alerted anyone that cares to Chikhaoui’s potential and this coming weekend will be great especially if we beat a team from Mexico which recently took the Superliga title here against a bunch of US teams. that would be something to talk about! but as you said, it a lil early and we don’t wanna jinx this. my fingers are crossed and i’m hoping for the best. inshallah marbou7a.

Anticipation is killing me. I am so excited about the match. It will be shown live in the USA 12:30am ET if you have Fox soccer channel. So strap on your boots, and lets get ready to roll. There may be a time conflict because There is the Mayweather fight, but common, lets get real :) . I am saving my really good comments for a victory. Hopefully Tunis power will finally be shown tonight!
