The FTF Comes to a Decision: Bertrand Marchand

April 4th, 2008 | By: Rami | 15 Comments »

Next CoachIn the end it looks like common sense will prevail. The FTF has officially submitted Bertrand Marchand’s name as the only viable candidate for the head coaching position to the Ministry of Sports. Now all we need to do is wait for the formalities and the signing off on the decision by the guys who are gonna pay him his salary (one that is equal to Lemerre’s but less than what Tigana, Gernot Rohr and Vahid Halilhodzic were asking for).

In my mind it’s definitely a great day for Tunisian soccer. I’ve explained why I think so before so I won’t bore you with that again. An official press conference could take place as early as next week. Mosaique FM also reported that the assistant coach will be Tunisian and that Maher Kanzari, Kais Yaakoubi, Ferid Belgacem, Hmida al Tiwiri and Ali Boumnijel are all in the running.

Who would you prefer at this post? I can’t claim to know every single one of these guys but I have my opinion. Esperance fans might not like it since he’s under contract at the moment but I’d be really thrilled to see Kanzari in this position. He did wonders with our youngsters and helped them to the second round of the U-17 World Cup. I feel like a Marchand-Kanzari tandem could be the key to getting us to that same place with our senior squad (both of their teams play no holds barred offensive football). Ok I’ll stop, we haven’t even qualified yet so maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me know what you think about all this. You know where I stand.

Kanzari may be good, but he seems to need a personality. I’ve never seen him expressing himself and making any sense. May be he’s a doer, but he also needs to communicate. Yaakoubi seems to be a cry baby; may be he should consider an acting career. The “Dimanche Sport” crowd seem to like him, but I’ve seen him doing strange things on the sidelines. Marchand needs a calm person to go with his style. Here is an idea, how about his current assistant with l’Etoile? That would leave my favorite team with nothing, so I’m only kidding. I bet Marchand will pick Boumnijel. He seems very professional and probably good at performing his duties in an effective manner..no drama! All kidding aside, though, I’m glad they picked Marchand; he’s done wonders with l’Etoile and he’s a very humble man. Most importantly, I’m thrilled not to have to see Lemerre making a mockery of our national team.

Is Marchand really that good ? I mean , the result of ESS where always good even before him. Thats more an achievement from the whole ESS mangenment and youth academie.
Marchand versus Lemerre: Lemerre have proven himself on the international foot scene, Marchand ???
I hope they pick boumnijel , the man got fighting spirit !

Rachid, we’ll see what happens. I’ve heard Kanzari in some interviews making enough sense but maybe he’s better with 16 year olds than he is with senior players. Marchand does seem to really get along with his assistant at Etoile but as you said it’d be difficult to see Etoile letting both of them go. I mean they already are sending the majority of their players to the national team, now two coaches would be a bit much huh ;)

Moni, I think Marchand will do a great job but you do bring up a valuable point: Club football and international football are completely different affairs. That’s the one thing missing from his resume but he exudes confidence and seems flexible enough to make that sorts of transition well. The fact that he already knows our country well will help him a lot in the change of schedule and approach.

Before I forget, I wanted to tell everyone that next friday on Goltv on the new episode if Futbol Mundial they are having a special on our own Amine Chermiti. I will not be home and thus wont be able to record it and post it online but if someone could do that, or at least watch and tell us about it that would be great.
This is great press for our guy though! Cant wait to see what comes of it!

WOW! That’s incredible news. I didn’t know that Tahar. I don’t have the means to record it but I’ll definitely keep an eye out. It might make its way onto the youtubes and dailymotions of the world anyway. I love that show and the prospect of having him on it is fantastic.

Even in an alternate universe where Bruce Arena is Tunisian, that still makes no sense. What are you his agent Steve? If so, you need to do a better job.
