Nigeria Defeat Tunisia in Game for the Ages

February 4th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | No Comments »

Two of Africa’s best teams squared off in an emotional, phyiscal and thrilling contest in the African Nations Cup in Egypt. In the end, it was Nigeria exacting revenge on Tunisia by the slimmest of margains. The Super Eagles advance to the semifinals of the tournament thanks to a 6-5 advantage in a penalty shootout.

After 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time, the two giants of Africa were left to decide their fate with penalty shots. Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama saved from Riadh Bouazizi to seal the victory and to send the Super Eagles into a celebration.

Tunisia have to be disappointed with the result but it can’t be upset with the effort. The defending tournament champions played hard but in the end came up just a bit short.

The loss means that Cote d’Ivoire remains the only World Cup qualifier still alive in the African Nations Cup, a tournament that is living up to its reputation for unpredictability this year in Egypt.
