FTF Turns to France in Time of Need

Tahar Sioud, the FTF president, has been in Paris meeting with four candidates vying to be the next manager of the Carthage Eagles. The interviewees are French internationals Luis Fernandez and Jean Tigana, the former French national team assistant coach Guy Stephan and Vahid Halilhodzic, a former Yugoslav international.

So what to make of this? While I know a fair amount about these coaches I wanted to get a well informed opinion that is closer to the source and thankfully my colleague and good friend Massaer, captain of the Senegal WCB and the Marseille Offside, stepped in to candidly offer his opinion:

Fernandez: “He is the only French coach to have ever won a European competition. He coached the PSG three times already and always won something. They all want him back.” Interesting…

Tigana: “He’s one of the best players ever but he didn’t coach much. He had amazing results at Monaco and was one of the reason Lyon are what they are today. but he’s kind of a hot head, very into his ways. Mostly fans love him but presidents don’t ever like the free spirited ones, especially when they don’t see results quickly. If he coaches you guys, one thing’s for sure, you’ll be joga bonito. I can’t guarantee you’ll win something but it’ll be entertaining. He takes chances.” Someone who takes chances! That would be revolutionary for a Tunisia coach! Tigana = Polar opposite of Lemerre

Halilhodzic: “Too strict. He’s Shehatta 3.0. The upgrade to the upgrade.” Hmm, sounds like General Lemerrinho to me.

Stephan: “No! Don’t take that guy. He’ll f%#k your team up. The only good thing he’ll do is go find obscure Tunisians playing in the Ukranian second division and killing it. He’s an amazing scout but he’s not much of a coach.” I’ll take your word for it.

Verdict: “Tigana is the one to go with” Merci bien mon ami!

While this goes against the notion that we’d turn to Bertrand Marchand and Michel Decastel, who are already based in Tunisia and have an understanding of the country and the domestic league, it’s reassuring to see that the FTF is active. It’s funny we’ve been reduced to that as it’s the least we should expect but if you consider their track record, this is a noted improvement. The mere fact that they put this information on their website is a huge step in the right direction. No use being overly secretive as it only fosters distrust and cynicism (a contributing factor to the Lemerre soap opera that we’ve had to endure in recent years). Thoughts anyone?

By the way, that France fixture is official! It’s on the FFF website. Mark the date, October 14th 2008. Finally, a high profile match to look forward to. The FTF has a return fixture date set for 11th of November but there’s no mention of that anywhere else so I’m not sure. Please let it be true!

Hope they don’t agree with all these coach’s. A step back in coaching. Its realy a shame that Lemmere had to go. My trainer recomendations are Co Adriaanse from the Netherlands or maby Jol from the Netherlands. Ask your self the questions why all these coach’s are still avallible and now for a long time avallible. No one layed eyes on them just for now. Zoubayer Baya also can full fill the vacant job as had coach. Some one from Tunisia if international experience.

Bassem, while I like Dutch coaches I don’t think that any are available right now that have the right profile for the job. Not sure Jol would even be interested and frankly I think that his failure to create a reliable defense at Tottenham after so long in charge is frightening. I’m cool with another French coach. While he was a great player and is pretty good at match analysis, Zoubayer doesn’t have one coaching job to his name. You can’t put an untested person in that position. Plus, he’s got more things on his mind. He’s part of the Tunisian Futsal national team that will be playing at the Futsal CAN soon. Maybe if he turns to coaching he’ll be ready down the road. Definitely not there yet.

Rami, what you say is true, but we need a fresh wind that can build up a team and doesn’t creat two sides in a team, a french-tunisia side and tunisian national players on the other side. That’s what happend with Lemmere and i don’t predict change when a french coach arrive’s again. The two camps where divided from each other and there was a lot of tention in the team. It doesn’t have to be a dutch coach, but a new fresh wind would be nice. All the french coach are circulating through africa now for a couple of years from Morocco to Tunisia, from Tunisia to Senegal, From Senegal back to Morocco.

If we want African football to reach another evolution we need to change coachs i think. We miss some tacktical skills i think, technical skills and physic we have that already, look at Karim Hagui’s skills, he isn’t the same player any more after a good season at Bayer Leverkussen. They Thought him alot and that reflects on his play for our national team.

So we need a coach that makes a real team out of this squad and to teach players to not be stars but equals of each other and work hard for one and other. So my preferable coach would be some one new, not french and doesn’t need to be Dutch also, maby Jose Mourinho

Le quotidien La Voix du Nord de ce matin confirme l’arrestation et le placement en garde à vue, dimanche, de l’attaquant tunisien du Racing Issam Jemaa.
Jemaa, qui avait semble-t-il un différend à régler avec un joueur d’Arras, se serait rendu dimanche au domicile de ce dernier, accompagné par quelques amis.

La suite des événements est assez confuse. D’après La Voix, une bagarre aurait éclaté. L’Arrageois aurait fini par appeler la police. Les forces de l’ordre auraient repéré la voiture de Jemaa qui leur a opposé une certaine résistance.

La police a finalement réussi à interpeller le Lensois et l’ont placé en garde à vue, en compagnie d’un de ses amis. Jemaa est sorti lundi soir. Il est convoqué le 30 avril devant le tribunal pour refus d’obtempérer et outrages à policiers.

Bassem, in regards to your view on coaches, you have an interesting take on things and I see some of your points. There’s going to be that little bit of distance between the Tunisians born in France and those born in Tunisia but to be honest we’ve improved a lot in that regard. From what I saw during the African Cup, this is the most harmonious group we’ve had in a long time. They all were joking and getting along well. The rift is created when Lemerre picks players who are out of shape and sitting on the bench in Europe as opposed to those performing at a high level in Tunis. With him out, I would hope that this changes. I see what you mean about the roaming French coaches. More weight is put to your argument if you consider that in Ghana the “ecole francaise” didn’t have a single coach in the Semis despite the continent being dominated by them. We’ll see what happens. My vote stays with Marchand though.

Moni is a iq less then a fishstick kind of guy that doesn’t respect people in the Netherlands but lives, eats, learns and earns in the Netherlands but only complains about them. He should shut his mouth and have some respect for people around here. I am a Tunisian but i respect the Dutch people, some of them are bad and some of them are good, just like in the states as in Tunisia.
