From Bad To Worse: Mouihbi Tears ACL, Out 8 Months Minimum!

October 5th, 2008 | By: Rami | 16 Comments »

Mouihbi Torn ACLFeel free to start throwing, kicking, or punching anything in sight. As the title indicates, it’s the worst news we could hear on the eve of our last qualifier against Seychelles and highly anticipated friendly against France. As if it wasn’t enough we’re missing Chikhaoui, Chermiti, Santos in our attack. I was watching CA take on Haras Houdoud of Egypt this afternoon and witnessed an injury to arguably the best player of the domestic league, Youssef Mouihbi.

He fell while trying to make a challenge and though it didn’t look too serious, he didn’t come back on and the alarm bells started ringing. Match ended with a relatively positive result for CA and then I come back to my computer and find that the worst case scenario for both Club Africain and the Carthage Eagles has materialized: Mouihbi has a torn ACL which sideline him for 8 months!!!

That means his season is over, his chance to play in the game of his life against France is finished, and he faces a long and arduous road to return from this injury. In addition, Club Africain’s attempt to retain the league title just took a massive hit, and our national team which needs attackers more than ever finds itself deprived of one of it’s most promising elements. Ironic that on the same day Tunisia makes sure at least one CAF Confederation Cup finalist will be from our country, such bad news surfaces. As the English say, I’m gutted.

This story is still developing but Dimanche sport has confirmed it (video below). In a time when our attack is paper thin, another pivotal and technically skilled offensive player goes down. This is incredibly depressing. Now Coelho has a serious problem on his hands. Who does he bring in to fill the void? Allagui? Zitouni? What kind of luck is this anyways?

Update

Coelho has opted to replace Youssef with Majdi Mosrati of Etoile. Huge chance for Mosrati but there’s no use trying to convince ourelves that we’re getting the same value out of him as we would have out of Mouihbi. It’s one day later and I still feel like crap about this. I expect that to continue for some time…

fuck…maybe zouheir can fill in, or jemaa and ben saada up front, i dont know. i dont think it would be horrible if we played 4-5-1 anyway, for all our attancking problems, our midfield is in fantastic form, so maybe it will make up for it.

WHAT THE HELL:( !!!!!!!!!WHAT ELSE COULD GO WRONG. I HOPE COELHO CONVINCES ALLAGUI(WHO HAS 8 GOALS ALREADY FOR HIS CLUB,2 TODAY) TO COME TO TUNISIA NOT ONLY FOR THIS GAME, BUT ALSO TELL HIM HE COULD BE THE FUTURE. ZITOUNI IS ALSO NOT A BAD PLAYER TO CALL SINCE HE HAS EXPERIENCE. I think that we should ben saada up front for this game as a forward.

Its days like these that make me wish that football related news didn’t affect my mood so much. So sad for Mouihbi who was being counted on big time big time by the technical staff of both CA and the NT. Not really sure if we can bring Allagui in so late. I think you need to send the convocation 2 weeks in advance for players in foreign leagues. Same would go for Zitouni.

I’m just really pissed off. Chikhaoui and Chermiti better come back quick. My three favorite players have been so unlucky. I think I should start dissing the players I like instead. Maybe they’ll stick around for a while that way.

That just sucks, now we don’t really have any good forwards at all.
I think we need to play a 4-2-3-1. We should put Jaidi in forward to say that we don’t have any strikers, and we should make him just head the ball into the net like he always does.

Unbeleivable!!!! This ruined the day for me even if he’s the best player of our top rival. Our 3 best players are injured just before we face a world-class team which we do rarely.
Are we simply unlucky? Chikhaoui was supposed to come back on the 9th of July and I thought that Chermiti’s injury wasn’t that bad and that he would come back after 3 weeks

Hi Rami,

Ied Moubarik ou Snien Daima to you and all the visitors of this BLOG!!

It’s very unfortunate for Mouihbi this injury. I really have my doubts in the Physical preparation approach of our players in Tunisia. This is not the first time our players are injured in the same way (Chikhaoui, Chermiti Mouihbi etc etc…!!!

The Tunisian players are not Strong enough, They do not have well trained and developed muscles!!! I mean if you compare them with the Europeans Egyptians Africans etc the Tunisian player is very well… weak. They rely too much on technical skills, but these days that is definitely not enough.

I also want to point out that now we can see that Tunisia is not an Attacking football country at all as we presume it to be. As soon as we loose 2-3 players we all scream that it is a disaster???? I would say let’s talk to our biggest clubs and ask them to generate more Strikers for us than defenders or defensive midfield players!
This way we always have enough choice and avoid that players consider them selves as non-replaceable.

regards,

By the way Rami I spend a great week in Washington and found what I was looking for :0)

3lina ou 3lik ya 5ouya Fahd. Glad you had a good time in DC. Your point about our players fragility is an interesting one. This injury can happen to the most in shape athlete in any sport though. Our reliance on technique is positive in my view but you are right that we must dedicate more time to physical preparation to create robust athletes. From what I know mouihbi is nothing short of exemplary in training and off the field too.

Tamim, Haras played very well. Especially in the second half once mouihbi came off and we lost control of midfield. The absence of yahia, alexis, and then mouihbi had a great impact. No doubt that haras plays some very appealing football. Needless to say, CA faces a tough task in Sfax without the aformentioned players. Rabbi yostor. At least one finalist will be Tunisian.

Hey Achraf, I updated the post this morning actually. Easy not to notice though. Whenever I update my posts after originally publishing them I write “Update” in bold and then whatever the update is underneath it. As you can tell by the latest one, he’s called up Majdi Mosrati of Etoile to replace Mouihbi.

Thierry Henry was called up so I expect him to play. Here’s the list for France: http://france.worldcupblog.org/euro-2008/france-call-ups-for-romania-and-tunisia.html

I’m trying to find a way to be positive but struggling a little at the moment. Inshallah we play with the proper “glayeb” and rise to the occasion even with so many pillars of our team missing. Saber Ben Frej is missing this game too I believe (ankle injury in practice). They haven’t declared if anyone is replacing him but if I was Coelho I wouldn’t hesitate to include Bilel Ifa. The kid is 18 and he was the most present on a CA team full of veterans yesterday. Really, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a young Tunisian defender with his kind of assurance and self confidence. Plus he can play right AND left back equally well. I should shut up, maybe he’ll get injured… Lotf 3lih.

Bilal IFA IS EXCELLENT MASHA ALLAH ALIEH. If he continues like this (and work on his physical development) we have a great future player. He is one of the fantastic players we discovered during the world cup in Korea. Like mosaab Sassi and others.
This shows us that we should have more faith in our youth rather than spending our money in too many African players in my view!!

By the way what about Ben Arfa could he be selected for Tunisia? he is doing great at Marseille!!

Rami, I feel for your loss and the fact that CA will now have to face CSS in Sfax without Yahia, Mouihbi, and the other African player. CA will have to win to advance to the final, not an easy task. Things would have been much better if CA managed to beat Harass Houdoud in Tunis in front of 45000 fans! I would not characterize that outcome as
‘relatively positive’. Here is how it was described by one Tunisian newspaper:

http://www.alchourouk.com/detailarticle.asp

Please do not misunderstand my comments, but I just want us to be a bit realistic. There is no need to suggest that somehow Mouihbi has become so indispensable to the NT. Yes, he does have potential, but he has not yet done anything really worth mentioning at the NT level. Potentially, Mosrati could work out to be an excellent replacement. I am sure, until God willing Mouihbi is back in good shape, CA too can manage to find a suitable replacement. The world of football can truly be brutal.

I agree with you Rachid about Mouihbi, but a player like him(even though he has not shown anything on the NT) means a lot in a situation where we are already missing our 3 top forwards. If it happened when we have healthy forwards with chermiti, chikhaoui, and Santos then it wouldn’t be a big deal then. Now that Mouihbi is out you got Majdi Mosrati and everyone knows Mouihbi is way better than he is. So Mouihbi vs Mosrati when you are missing 3 top forwards. I would go with Mouihbi.

Hey Rachid, totally respect your opinion. I used “relatively positive” to describe the result because it keeps us in the running for a place in the final. I wouldn’t say the same thing about the performance we put on. We couldn’t even string more than two passes together in the second half and completely gave away the midfield. Even without our big boys we’re still in with a chance. A lot of it will depend on whether Melliti steps up, whether Hadhria gets his chance and takes it, and whether Hammouda Maameri will finally show us his preseason form in a game that matters. Nevertheless, CSS are highly favored. Not only are they more experienced, but now add the injuries we have, and the fact that CSS is at home and you can see its not going to be easy at all.

As for Mouihbi I’ll defer to Achraf’s comments as they’re completely on point. Mosrati vs. Mouihbi isn’t even a discussion you can have based on previous accomplishments. That’s not a knock on Mosrati, its just praise for Youssef’s talents and decisiveness in big matches for CA. Mouihbi certainly hasn’t been nearly as effective for country as he has for club but I had a feeling this was going to be his big game (I’ll admit that I’ve said that more than once though).

Now CA will just have to look towards the youth and fully unleash Hadhria and Mesaadi. I hear there’s another striker in the youth ranks that could be brought up. Once the winter transfer market comes around I’ll be expecting some moves.

You see, Mouihbi will have to work with that injury in the rest of his career i think, he will play but he’ll never get rid of it. It’s like zlatan Ibrahimovic. He is working with his knee all the time and he plays even if it hurts a little.
