Tunisia vs. France: Pre and Post Match Jibber Jabber

October 13th, 2008 | By: Rami | 34 Comments »

Hate to bring this up last minute but I didn’t have much notice myself. Long story short: My job is sending me to Ghana on a business trip. I leave today and will be back in the USA on Friday. This means a number of things for Tunisia WCB:

- I haven’t finished analyzing Tunisia vs. Seychelles.

- I haven’t previewed Tunisia vs. France.

- I might not even be able to watch Tunisia vs. France until my return.

- I may not have a regular internet connection in Accra and will not be updating the blog until my return.

I’m definitely not thrilled about the situation since I know how much everyone is anticipating our matchup against les Bleus and I wanted to help ramp up the anticipation with a preview etc. Then again, who am I to turn down a free trip to an awesome country I’ve never been to before? I find it ironic that I’m going there about a year late for CAN 2008!

So I’m leaving this space open for anyone who wants to drop thoughts or comments before or after the match in Paris. If I can blog from Ghana I will, otherwise I’ll be back to my usual level of blogoholicness upon my return. Apologies for the lack of coverage of this great event but I promise a full recap when I get back from my travels.

Forza Tounes!

wow this was one of the best half’s I have seen tunisia play in a while, except for that one defensive mistake. Issam Jomaa keep up the good work, but dont risk using your arm anymore, I was not happy with that and the one by Ghzal, but good thing we got away with it. Fahd Ben Khallfallah is really impressing me. He is passing and shooting very well and is very comfortable with the ball. Good luck 2nd half

This is a shame, the same as against spain on the world cup.
We score the 1st goal, then in the second half we give it all away this is really a shame, but im impressed by the progress we’ve made, ben khalfallah is really impressing as a winger and jemaa should try to keep his concentration during the whole match.

We lack endurance and concentration, and not to mention 5 or 6 players.

Overall this was a good friendly BRAVO TOUNES!

Mikari and ragued also showed some quality skills :D
That counter-attack of ours was very fast and good.

Defence is getting better and better and haggui saved us a couple of times too.

Tell me what did you guys noticed during this match?

I am not satisfied with some of Coelho’s choices, like playing R.Felhi as a defensive midfielder … whose idea was that ? Seif Ghezal seemed out of shape, I would’ve left him on the bench and played Felhi in his position. Playing with only one forward up front clearly isn’t efficient enough, we could’ve really hurt them in the first half if we had Chermiti and Jomaa, and the Chikhaoui from 10 months ago.
I would also have made the substitutions earlier in the second half. Some players deserve more than just another cap by playing 2 minutes, be it against France.
Fahd Ben Khalfallah is definitely impressive, I could very well see our full-strength attacking line operating according to his movement and passes.
I hope we get Egypt in the draw next week, at least we’ll have some passionate, potentially heroic games !

Oh yeah , one more thing : booing the Marseillase … totally not classy. I had hoped Tunisian fans would finally show some respect. And who was this chick singing Humat Al Hima ?

I actually liked Ghzal today, he really fits well and reminds me of another Jaidi. Ghzal made some nice saves for us that could have been schored. He defended pretty well. I agree about having only one forward. This line up would remind someone of the one that Lemerre would use. But Coelho did not have many choices at the forward position. I expected the Tunisian fans to booooo Hatem Ben Arfa. When he took one of the corner kicks, I thought that if this game was at Rades, he would have had bottles thrown at him. But I repect his decision in playing with France. He has quality to play for them or us. Now we move on and wait and see what happens at the draw on October 22 and Coelho departure for Germany to watch Sami Alagui.

Yo boys, I’m in Ghana and checked the result and video of the goals last night. Hardly enough for proper analysis but it looks like we were a few defensive mistakes away from a positive result in France. The game is available for download on the maxxed football forums: http://www.fbtz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114655

you have to create an account to be able to download it. Needless to say, my internet connection here isn’t strong enough to support such an activity so I’ll patiently wait till I get back to get to see the match etc.

I heard the French national anthem got booed which is upsetting but at from what I heard we held our own in the first half and Ben Khalfallah played very well. I’m sure there’s more to it than that but I’m working off bits and pieces here. It’s too bad the French goals (the last two especially) came off some bad defensive mistakes. But when you think about it ours did too I guess. Nice take by Jemaa though. That guy always comes through when I least expect it (Senegal game for example). Anyways, I hope you’re all doing well.

Accra is beautiful and the people are fantastic. I’ve already had three or four lengthy football conversations and you’ll be happy to know that our reputation in Ghana is a good one and they recognize our quality (I gave mutual compliments the Blackstars of course). Most everyone agrees Cameroon vs. Tunisia was the match of the tournament.

Ahh

Where to Start??

Balbouli was ok and could not do much about the goals. he is by far better than Kasroui, he is fast and reads the game well.

Bousaidi was very good and very active on the right side the first half and some good moments in the second, overall we can say the right side is well occupied by him and ben Frej.

Saif was concentrated and down to business he made some mistakes but were minor compared to the good defensive actions.

Haggui, started well but made two major mistakes causing the actual defeat, nevertheless we can say he is much better than Jaidi in that position.

Mikari, very good!!

Tijani, very weak invisible did not have an addional value

Rgaeud, Excellent player to my surprise give that extra to the squad he is similar to Nafti. (COMBATANT)

Radouen Felhi, He is not a defensive midfielder that is obvious, but he tried his upper best as always, need to be always with squad.

Fahd, played well in the beginning but is definitely no attacker!! He should be an offensive midfielder.

Jom3a, apart from the goal he was horrible, not able to control the ball, not able to make any attacking action. constantly falls on the pitch not Fast etc etc. It was horrible to see. Nevertheless this is also due to the fact he had no help what so ever.

Again we can see Tunisia is not an attacking country and we played the Lemerde way which was obvious!!

We might had a better chance when we would have Chermiti, Chikhaoui and Mouihbi, These guys are smart and innovative in their play and could have made the french weak defence look horrible.

Well we can say we are still struggling to play controlling offensive football and so we will face a long difficult road during the qualifications for South Africa.

regards

I missed the beggining part of the match, the introductions. And just read this article and I could not beleive the Tunisian fans booing at the french national anthem. I understood them booing ben arfa, but booing the anthem is really disrespectful. The france’s sports minister said that matches will be stopped if this happens againg.

Well, Coelho opted for a 4-5-1 type of play so we could defend as soon as we needed it, but also create a good tactical counter attack, it was good to see the players technically outplay france players in the first half, this shows us that our team is developping a new kind of play…maybe this is the kind of play we need!

No more long balls and only playing on our own half, the only depressing thing for me is the lack of attacking power we have, but thats obviously not without a good reason.

I think as soon as Coelho gets to choose between 4 or 5 attackers he wil go for another line up maybe 4-4-2?

Overall im very happy to see they are trying their best, we still have a long way to go but the pieces will fall into their place

The Tunisian squad cracked physically and mentally in the 2nd half. But who can blame them. That just reflected the level of the league each of our players is playing at. I am sure that every player gave nothing less than his best.

However, the game opened my eyes on something else. We are good in the destructive play (just what we did in the first half). This is when we abort the play making process of the opponent. But this is only effective when the players are fit enough and when the score is in our favor (after all that is what we’re trying to maintain). Now, when we need to build up our own constructive attacking game (when we’re behind in the score like in the 2nd half), we are simply clueless! No one in the midfield is capable of holding the ball for more than 10 consecutive seconds without giving it away (the type of Tarek Dhiab and Agrbi). This is why our play became too direct. As soon as a player gets the ball back, he tries to get rid of it as soon as possible, as if he is holding a time bomb! So what to do? Look for Issam Jemaa and send him the ball in a 50 to 60m journey hoping that it will reach him on his left foot!!! And even when it does, he is usually so remote that he had to wait for 10s or so before his first teammate shows up on his radar. Remember though, holding the ball that long is not among his best qualities. Having said that, I have to admit that he’s pretty good at doing the donkey work in the attack (again, when he is fit).

So, overall, there were two half times to learn from in this game, but for two totally different reasons. Our national coaches did a very good job so far, given that they only had a few weeks to build up the current team. I am quite sure that they are very well aware of the missing pieces. Let us hope they still manufacture them in Tunisia.
