Chikhaoui Goal Lifts Carthage Eagles Over Zambia in Rematch

January 8th, 2008 | By: Rami | 15 Comments »

So guys, I didn’t see the match. I was at work and I just came home to find that my soapcast recording didn’t function as well as it usually does. Can somebody who saw it fill me (and other readers) in on how things went. Nothing major just some observations, opinions etc. while I wait for the full highlights. I’d really appreciate it! I checked the result (1-0) and can see that Chikhaoui scored another one for us today. With his style of play and his willingness to take responsibility it seems that he is morphing into our leader on the pitch. Amazing considering he’s only 21!

Lineup: A.Mathlouthi, W.Bekri (Y.Chikhaoui), R.Jaïdi (S. Ben Fradj), R.Felhi, S.Ghezal, M.Meriah, M.Nafti (C.Zouaghi), M.Traoui, C. Ben Sâada, A.Chermiti (J.Mnari), S.Santos (M.Ben Dheifallah).

The Goal

His awareness in holding his run is impressive but check the head fake he uses to completely fool the keeper. Everyone expected a pass towards the middle and instead what they got was a simple looking but difficult to execute pass into the back of the net.

The Highlights

Got hold of a few. Looks like we created most of the opportunities.

Head fake or no, that keeper was in an awful position. Nice goal though.

Rami, you did not miss much! It was another episode of Lemerre hastily trying different things. One thing for sure, though, thank God for l’Etoile in general and Chikhaoui in particular. When he is in the game, it looks like a completely different crowd. He is one of very few hopes we have against Senegal. I was glad to see Mathlouthi given his chance, he is definitely much quicker to react than Kasraoui. Sabeur Ben Frej should definitely be given more time to play. He gave an excellent ball to Santos, and unfortunately his header was way out even though the goal keeper was nowhere close! Santos looked way out of shape! I have given up trying to understand Lemerre’s reasoning, but things still do not look good. Let’s hope for the best.

Thank you for the feedback Rachid. I’m dismayed to hear that Santos still looks out of shape. I thought with the recent playing time and the two goals he scored with Toulouse that maybe he’d recovered some of his form. Man, that Chermiti suspension just keeps looking worse. Hopefully we can get goals from other places in the first couple of games. At least Chikhaoui is stepping up. I can’t get enough of that kid. In his first two games as a married man the guy has scored twice :)

i understand your concern rami, but let’s not forget about jemaa. in my opinion, hes our second best player, and when hes in form, he’s fire. his injury doesnt look to be that bad, and he should be playing against iran. i also agree with you about chika being more of a 10 than a 9, but zaiem is my favorite player so naturally i’d prefer him to wear it. in anycase, you could but chika in left back and he’d still score goals for you. im actually starting to like the idea of him playing striker. We have many capable midfielder. i think zaiem or belaid can take care of the playmaking responsabilites and imagine the strikeforce of jemaa and chikhaoui up front…that would be a dream. of course when chermiti comes back, then we can put him back in midfield, but for the first two games, i’d like to see how that would play out.

today they played a good game. The defense seemed to be decent. Jaidi played good in defense today but he came off when the second half started. Looks like he is still tired from the games he played on the weekend. The midfield was good. I didn’t really see much action in attack the first half. There was a couple of chances players had in the second half to score but they just couldn’t control their shot. I mean that they were right in front of the net yet they miserably kicked it too high. Santos seemed like he played good to me today and i think he will do good in the African cup. I agree that as soon as Chikhaoui came on the field, it was like there was a whole new team. He helped make some plays and it seems as if the players played better when he came on.The Zambian team were all over chikhaoui when he came on. Like 3vs1, maybe more yet he still did good. I hope he keeps scoring at least a goal a game and that will be good.
So the conclusion is that Tunisia did good today.

Do you guys think Lemerre are going to play with the absolutely best time he’s got against Iran (best eleven), I mean the team he’s going to play with in the can?. He hasn’t got more time trying ifferent things!.

I don’t think We’ll make it to the second round unless our players do well and wins over Iran promising and it was like we played with 10 men yesterday, SANTOS did nothing but i’m sorry for him too, he needs confident and OUR TEAM IS TO DEFENSIVE. We need at least two attacking midfielders on the middle of the pith that we don’t have, and two hungry wingers. Yesterday I couldn’t see which of our players that were left/right wingers. Nafti is a good playmaker and he is defensive with Mnari and Chaker Zouaghi, WE HAVE ONLY GOT DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS but we need players that can attack with more strenght forward in the midfield, ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS, like we had Ben Achour before with a support from Bouazizi (hungry)for example!!!. We lost Belaid, but Ben Saada didn’t perform good yesterday either!. I think we needed the two matches against Equatorial Guinea and Iran. The team is new and the players can’t play together, they don’t now each other so well. AND LEMERRE! Meriaah played in the midfield!! OMG!

We must realise the fact that our team is too defensive and we haven’t got quick players enough, many of them are hopeless! It was like 100 YARDS from the midfield too Chermiti and SANTOS. Santos and Chermiti didn’t get the support they needed from the midfield!!!! If my english skills were better I could have explained it better………

We can’t at least won like that against Senegal and Angola, we need to have a good organisation and every player have to take care of their position and play well!, AND WHAT STUPID SUPPORTERS WE’VE GOT. THey don’t even like football or “soccer” like you americans say, when the team needs them they don’t come and support them. If rades was full like 58,000 against Zambia the players would have the right motivation adn win like 4-0 guaranteed!. In England, France or Spain the supporters go too the stadium to see their team play NOT LIKE IN TUNISIA, our supporters go too see the other team. IF it was Tunisia vs. France rades would have been full, 60.000!. They are like swearing at the players behind the Television. A ticket too Rades costs like 5 dinars and no one goes, the think like this “What the fuck?! 5 dinars! I can buy a sandwich with tuna and harissa! Hell no!”………….

Skander, I agree with you on the supporter issue. It’s always been like this. Unless we’re playing a BIG team from Europe (doesn’t happen too often) or a Maghreb derby (Morocco or Egypt- even though Egypt isn’t technically maghreb) then no one goes. It doesn’t help that Roger Lemerre has disgusted so many Tunisians with his questionable decision making. A lot don’t want to go to the stadium because they can’t bear to see so many promising players out of position. I think that once Roger leaves we might see more fans at our friendlies. Although history does not support that idea. Tunisians would rather stay at home or at a cafe watching the match if it’s against an African team like Botswana, Malawi, etc.

I’ll be interested to see how many people show up for the Iran game considering they’re an Asian powerhouse. Plus it will be our last game before the CAN so hopefully our supporters give our team a good send off. Having a player like Chikhaoui will hopefully start to win the fans back though. He’s the kind of guy that you want to go see produce magic in person. If we go far in the CAN it will go a long way to winning some fans back too.

Theres a chance all this negativity will actually work in our favor as some teams respond well to adversity and get a “us against the world” feeling that helps them bond and forges good on and off field relationships. I hope thats what happens.

The eagles of Carthage are showing there true skill, better tactics are being played in this game and are all over South Africa, the South Africans are playing so physical but they are not footballers we are footballers since 1918, we are waiting for Angola, no problem, well done lads
